Route 66 Museum in Clinton
U.S. road atlas
The “Road Atlas” series by Rand McNally. Buy the full USA or one per state. The only drawback is the large format (almost A3). For general routes and planning, the Italian version “Stati Uniti Canada e Messico. Atlante Stradale. ISBN 88‑415‑2638‑6” A4, 19,500 lire.
Route 66 guide & maps
“Route 66, Travellers Guide and Roadside Companion” $11.95. The best overall, extremely detailed. No photos, but every mile. I bought it on Amazon.
Route 66 illustrations & maps
“The illustrated guidebook to the Mother Road. ISBN=0‑9641457‑0‑7” $19.95. Nice photos, reverse route, too bulky to carry. I bought it on Amazon.
Route 66 maps
“Here it is, Route 66. The map series. Ghost Town Press.” One map per state. Not the best, but there are very few.

Road software
Delorme “AAA Map’n’Go 5.0”. Excellent road planner for the USA and parts of Canada/Mexico. Find it at mapngo.com. Calculate the shortest, fastest or scenic route and avoid areas. It also shows road works and temperatures (online updates). It’s the program I used for this site’s routes.
